Club History 1970s

1968 – 1975: Club changed to Margate Sub Aqua Club 106. Meetings held at Seaman’s Mission Club in Ramsgate. Bob Peacock joined and John Chamberlain was the Entertainments officer. When Butlins closed they trained at the Army Cadets School in Dover. The 1st Diving Instructor courses were held there. Bill Windridge was Diving Officer at this time.

1972: Margate pool used for pool training then moved to Ramsgate pool in 1975. Kevin Nolan was Diving Officer at this time. St Laurence college was also used for pool training and Dave Ellingworth knocked out his front teeth in the pool. Stonar Lake in Sandwich was used for open
water training. Dives also took place at the gravel pits in Ayelesford, Faversham Lakes and Laughing Waters now Inn on the Lake at Cobham.

1973: Club name changed to Thanet Sub Aqua Club 106. In the early 1970’s club split with Canterbury, Dover and later Folkestone setting up their own clubs.

1978/9: Reg Bell negotiated with the council to have the top floor of the Ice House which was in a derelict condition and about to be demolished. He got the club at a pepper corn rent of £5 per year. Bill Windridge got the roof replaced and club members renovated the interior. Kevin Nolan did the plumbing. The walk way to the club was installed by members, and well as the windows.
